Gastonia, NC (November 11, 2025) – A woman lost her life, and four others were hospitalized following a violent multi-vehicle crash on Sunday, November 9, at the intersection of Gaston Day School Road and Hoffman Road in Gastonia.
According to Gastonia Police, the crash occurred around 7:05 p.m. when a 19-year-old man driving a black Cadillac sedan at a high speed lost control, veered into oncoming traffic, and struck another vehicle head-on. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles.
Authorities confirmed that the second vehicle was operating as an Uber at the time of the crash. The driver, identified as 53-year-old Janice Lopez of South Carolina, tragically died at the scene. A woman riding as a backseat passenger sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. The 19-year-old Cadillac driver also suffered serious injuries, along with two additional occupants who were hospitalized.
Police and firefighters worked for several hours to secure the scene and assist the victims. Speed is believed to have been a significant contributing factor in the collision.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Janice Lopez. We also wish a full and speedy recovery to everyone injured in this devastating crash.
Car Accidents in Gastonia
Tragic incidents like the recent multi-vehicle crash in Gastonia serve as a stark reminder of how quickly lives can change on the road. In North Carolina, speeding and reckless driving continue to be the leading factors in serious and fatal car accidents. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), over 1,700 lives were lost in crashes statewide in 2024, with excessive speed contributing to nearly one-third of those fatalities.
Intersections such as Gaston Day School Road and Hoffman Road are hazardous because high-speed collisions in these areas often result in severe injuries or deaths. Victims of car crashes frequently face long recoveries, emotional trauma, and overwhelming medical bills.
In cases involving rideshare drivers and passengers, determining fault can be more complex, as liability may extend to the rideshare company’s insurance policy depending on whether the driver was actively transporting a passenger or waiting for a ride request.
Families who lose loved ones in preventable accidents may be eligible to pursue wrongful death claims, which can help cover funeral costs, lost income, and emotional suffering. Likewise, survivors who suffer injuries may seek compensation for medical expenses, rehabilitation, pain and suffering, and property damage.
