Belmont, NC (October 30, 2025) – A serious crash caused major traffic delays on Tuesday, October 28, on Interstate 85 northbound near Exit 27 in Gaston County.

According to the Belmont Police Department and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the collision occurred near Beatty Drive. It forced the closure of all northbound lanes shortly before 4 p.m. Emergency crews worked for several hours to clear the scene, and all lanes were reopened by 6:35 p.m.

Traffic quickly backed up into Gastonia, creating significant congestion throughout the evening. Officials urged motorists to avoid I-85 North during the closure and use alternate routes to reach their destinations.

At this time, it is unclear whether any injuries were reported in the crash. The cause of the accident remains under investigation by local authorities.

Car Accidents in Belmont

Car accidents along major highways, such as Interstate 85, are a frequent occurrence in Belmont and throughout Gaston County. With heavy commuter traffic between Charlotte and surrounding cities, even a single crash can cause miles of backups and significant disruptions. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), thousands of traffic collisions occur each year on I-85, often resulting from speeding, distracted driving, or following too closely in congested conditions.

When an accident results in injuries or property damage, victims often face substantial medical bills, vehicle repair costs, and lost income. In such cases, working with a personal injury attorney can be vital. A skilled attorney can help victims understand their rights, communicate with insurance companies, and ensure that claims are filed correctly and on time. They can also help identify all potential sources of compensation, including reimbursement for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages.

Victims of highway crashes should seek medical attention immediately, even if injuries appear minor. Some conditions, such as whiplash or concussions, may not show symptoms right away. Documenting injuries and the circumstances of the crash can strengthen any future claim.
