When Do You Get a Rental Car After a Property Damage Claim?
Spencer Hoisington with Campbell & Associates back again to talk to you about what happens after the claim has been accepted.
You’re going to want to get into a rental because your vehicle is dinged up. If your vehicle is drivable—if it’s not unsafe to be on the road in the condition that it’s in—you’re not going to get a rental until the parts are ready to begin the repairs on your vehicle.
The insurance company is not required to give you one. It’s not something that they’re just going to do willingly, so the insurance company is not going to give you one until the parts are ready to repair your vehicle.
Once the parts are ready to repair your vehicle, they’ll get you a rental car for the entire time that your vehicle is in the shop.
The one thing you’ve got to be cognizant of is when your vehicle is done being repaired, you’ve got to do everything you can to return that rental and get back into your vehicle. Otherwise, the insurance company is going to try to make you pay for those extra days.
What Happens If Your Car is a Total Loss?
If your vehicle is so banged up that you can’t drive it, they’re going to put you in a rental right away. The one thing you want to do while you’re in that rental is just to make sure that you’re staying on top of helping the insurance carrier finish the property damage process at that point.
If your vehicle can be fixed, just make sure that that vehicle gets to a repair shop timely, or if it’s at the tow yard (or if the vehicle is going to be deemed a total loss) go ahead and give the tow yard permission to release that vehicle to the insurance company so that that total loss payment can be processed in a timely manner.
In a nutshell, that’s what happens after the claim has been accepted. I would like next time to talk to you about more aspects of property damage.
