The 5 Most Common Personal Injury Claims
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 31 million people are injured due to accidents every year that require medical attention. Two million of those require hospitalization. As a result, millions of personal injury lawsuits are filed every year alleging the damage was caused by the negligence of another. Although there are many situations that may give rise to a personal injury claim, five types of negligence claims are more common than others.
Vehicular Accidents
Every year in the U.S., nearly 3,300 people die in vehicular crashes. Millions are injured and build up medical bills at the same time as they are losing wages. Some are injured so severely that their lives are changed forever and they will need lifetime medical attention. The majority of vehicle crashes are due to negligent drivers, leading to personal injury lawsuits.
Medical Malpractice
When patients are injured due to the acts or omissions of a health care provider that are below the acceptable standard of care, a medical malpractice lawsuit may be filed. Medical malpractice is a complex area of law that requires consultation with experts in the field who will be called to testify at trial.
Slip and Fall
Slip and fall accidents send approximately one million people to the emergency room every year. The main reason people take time off work is due to injuries suffered as a result of such an accident. Often, slip and fall accidents are due to the negligence of property owners or managers who fail to comply with their legal obligation to keep their property safe.
Boating Accidents
Boating accidents include all types of watercraft. One of the most common causes is that the boat was driven by an inexperienced or inattentive driver. Other causes include speeding, ignoring boating rules and excessive use of alcohol. Injuries may be minor, result in broken bones, or even lead to paralysis or death.
Dog Bites
The CDC reports that 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs every year. A quarter of those require medical attention, resulting in more than 1,000 dog bite emergency room visits every day. Some injuries are minor, but thousands of people are so severely injured that they require reconstructive surgery.
