Invokana Amputation Lawsuit

The Invokana litigation involves allegations that Invokana and Invokamet cause diabetic ketoacidosis and other acute kidney damage, which can lead to leg and foot amputations. It is alleged that Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which manufactured the drug, failed to adequately test or notify consumers of the risks.

What is Invokana?

Invokana (canagliflozin) is a prescription drug developed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals and approved by the FDA in 2013 to treat type-2 diabetes. Invokana and related drug, Invokamet (canagliflozin and metformin), were marketed as advanced alternatives to existing diabetes medications.

Invokana Side Effects

Invokana and Invokamet were marketed to reduce the amount of sugar absorbed from food into the bloodstream while indirectly lowering blood pressure and promoting weight loss.

Part of a new class of diabetes medications called SGLT2 inhibitors, the inhibitors’ mechanism of action is to block glucose from being absorbed into the kidneys, ultimately eliminating sugar through urine as a waste product rather than returning it to the bloodstream.

Despite FDA approval of Invokana in March of 2013 and Invokamet in 2014, they have since released several warnings regarding the dangers of the drugs.
