Knee Implant Lawsuit

DePuy’s Attune total knee arthroplasty system (TKA) was marketed for greater longevity, stability and range of motion. Instead, many patients implanted with the device reported spontaneous loosening or “debonding” as the surgical glue was not able to properly adhere the device to the bone. This caused severe pain, instability and the need for invasive revision surgery.

High Risk of Early Failure for Attune Knees

More than 700,000 total knee replacement surgeries are performed in the United States annually. These artificial knees typically last 15 to 20 years in most patients. The Attune knee replacement has shown to fail in less than two years.

Signs of Attune Knee Failure

A 2017 study in the Journal of Knee Surgery reported that the Attune knee replacement implant had an “unusually high rate of early failure” of as few as several months after surgery.

This was compared to the more than 90% of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures believed to last 12 years after surgery. The failures likely occur because the device is designed with an abnormally smooth surface that prevents the surgical cement from properly adhering to the tibial component. As a result, the device loosens where the hardware and cement meet, causing the entire knee replacement to painfully destabilize.

A defective knee replacement implant often requires risky and invasive revision surgery, as well as extensive rehabilitation or irreversible damage.

What Are the Symptoms of Premature Knee Replacement Failure?

  • Decreased Range of Motion
  • Loss of Mobility
  • Loosening of the Joint
  • Nerve Pain or Numbness
  • Swelling, Heat or Warmth
  • Persistent Pain
  • Blood Clots
  • Infection
  • Bone Loss
